Equally survivor of the Revolution as the Abbey Tower, the Echevinage, also known as the priory, used to be the main entrance to the abbey. It contained the courtrooms and prisons. A mosaic in the Gardens of the Abbey Tower allows us to imagine all the buildings that constituted the imposing Benedictine abbey of the 17th century. The Echevinage was then connected to the Abbey Tower. A surrounding wall surrounded the whole abbey and an arm of the Scarpe was deflected for better protection. The entry into the abbey was made by a drawbridge bridge overlooking a large courtyard where the monks of the order of Saint Benedict sold the products of their work.
