Contrary to its name, the Bassin Rond is rectangular! It was built to create a link between the Escaut and the Sensée. This place was once a hotspot for inland waterway transport, where French and Belgian sailors would stop, sometimes for several days, before crossing the Iwuy lock. While waiting for their passage, they would take advantage of the local trade: provisions, ropes, poles, cables, and would meet in the many grocers, brewers and taverns in the basin.
