Site minier d'Arenberg - La Porte du Hainaut

Rue Michel Rondet
59135 Wallers
There is no heritage without heirs! The Nord-Pas de Calais Mining Basin has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012. The region and its stakeholders are committed to managing and protecting this precious heritage so that it can be passed on to future generations. Far from freezing it in time, this preservation relies on the redevelopment of an entire area: the Arenberg mining site, now Arenberg Creative Mine, a center of excellence dedicated to image and the digital media of the future, is one of the major emblematic sites of this heritage redevelopment. Did you know? In 2022, we will celebrate the 10th anniversary of two historically linked events: the inscription of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais Mining Basin on the UNESCO World Heritage List (June 30, 2012) and the opening of this other Louvre (December 4, 2012) in Lens, the feast day of Saint Barbara, patron saint of miners. These two dates will be celebrated during an anniversary year filled with events and festivities, which you can discover at https://www.jai10ans.com/ FREELY VISIT THE MINING SITE (EXTERIOR) The site is open to visitors who can walk around freely, Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Please note: only the exterior areas are accessible during this time. No guides are available on site to lead tours of the interiors. To facilitate your visit, you can pick up the ACM Self-Guided Visit leaflet, available for download. GUIDED TOUR HISTORICAL HERITAGE TRAIL The Association for the Defense and Protection of the Historical and Cultural Heritage of Wallers-Arenberg offers tours of the site with former miners on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Contacts - Information - Prices - Registration: Mr. Thierry Cottel, President +33 (0)6 04 15 05 44 or ass_patrimoine.wallersarenberg@yahoo.com VISIT THE MINING SITE WITH THE TOURIST OFFICE The professional guides of the La Porte du Hainaut Tourist Office offer several tours of the mining site. You will not be able to descend into the tunnels, but an outdoor tour will allow you to appreciate the scale of the site! With the From Pick to Pixel tour, our guides invite you to discover the history of the site and its conversion into a Creative Mine, focusing on imagery. This tour includes a visit to the lamp room, the permanent exhibition, and the changing room (showers and changing rooms). New this year is the tour entitled Under the Headframes, a technical tour that explains the extraction process and the role of the headframes and shafts in mining operations. Also on the program is a visit to the Arenberg mining town, The Daily Life of the Miner, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as is the mining site itself, which served as a backdrop for Claude Berri's film in 1992. The tour focuses on the miner's life outside of work hours and the role and influence of the mining company on the miners and their families. Prepare your visit: by calling us at +33 (0)3 27 48 39 65, by email at contact@tourisme-porteduhainaut.fr or by messaging us on Messenger at @porteduhainauttourisme.
